CPT’s 4.6 MW CHP project at Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center has been in full swing this year. In March, the CPT lead design-build team successfully installed the two-piece Cleaver-Brooks Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) into a space constrained location in the exiting Morristown Medical Center boiler plant. Our mechanical contractor, The Barham Group, lead the way with support from Industrial Contracting & Rigging and Bay Crane. The job was completed safely and with minimum disruption to Hospital activities.

To facilitate the consolidation of multiple utility feeds to the hospital campus, infrastructure was installed to support an underground cable network to provide power to the far corners of the campus from one central location.  In April, new underground manholes were constructed and the team was trenching across the campus to lay conduits between the manholes.

At the end of April, the CHP building and turbine foundations were complete in time to set the Solar Turbines Mercury 50. This 4.6 MW gas turbine generator is part of the hospital’s cogeneration plant installation designed to save on energy and steam production costs. With an expectancy to run over 95% of the year and the ability to operate as an island during a utility outage, this gas turbine was chosen for its reliability. It not only saves money, but enables the hospital to continue to offer the community full services during prolonged utility power outages due to hurricanes, inclement weather conditions, or other miscellaneous issues.

In May, the natural gas compressor skids were installed which are an important component of the Combined Heat and Power Plant. The gas compressor boosts street level gas of 15 psi to 225 psi to enable the gas turbine generator to operate properly. The gas compressor skids include an oil-filled screw compressor, liquids separation units, and an air cooler to cool the compressed gas and the lubricating oil. This part of the project was completed thanks to The Barham Group, Industrial Contracting & Rigging, Bay Crane Companies, and JJ Crewe & Son.
