Project Description

Morristown Medical Center CHP Plant, Morristown, New Jersey
This new CHP plant will generate steam and electricity, increasing the hospital’s resiliency and ability to support critical functions if utility service is lost.

Client: Morristown Medical Center, Patrick J Burke, Jr., Director, Engineering

Design-Build Team: CPT / Bette Cring

Construction Value: $21 Million

CHP Plant Size: 5 MW

Operational: February 2022

Bette & Cring with CPT just completed a design-assist project to construct a new cogeneration plant for the Level 1 Trauma Center. The CHP System includes a natural gas fired turbine generator (located in a new 1,800 SF building located outside the existing boiler plant) paired with a 13,000 lb/hr Heat Recovery Steam Generator (in the existing boiler room). A gas compressor boosts the gas pressure for the turbine from ~2 psi to 200 psi for the combustion process.

The project features a Load Management System (LMS) that allows the system to run in Island Mode and the hospital to continue operations if utility power is lost. The LMS controls the supply of electricity during crises and sheds loads during outages.

The project also includes aggregation of two separate electric utility services currently feeding multiple transformers to two electric utility services feeding new medium voltage switchgear.

The CHP plant is designed to operate in parallel with either of the two services individually, and will supply power to all campus loading through new medium voltage switchgear. This new CHP plant will generate steam and electricity, increasing the hospital’s
resiliency and ability to support critical functions if utility service is lost.
