Project Description
Overlook Medical Center Trigeneration Plant, Summit, New Jersey
Retrofitting and expanding an existing older obsolete Trigeneration Plant to assist the health organization with meeting its climate goals.
Client: Atlantic Health System
Design-Build Team: CPT / Bette Cring
Construction Value: $19 Million
CHP Plant Size: 4 MW
Operational: 2024
Atlantic Health System, whose seven hospitals serve the medical care needs of twelve counties in New Jersey, has a commitment to substantially reducing emissions in the near future with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
In addition, following the impacts Superstorm Sandy on the state, the need for resiliency in the face of widespread power outages and on-site power generation which can keep its hospitals operational during weather events and other disasters is a must for Atlantic Health. Cogeneration and Trigeneration systems are a solution that meets both of these needs.
Following the successful completion of the Atlantic Health’s new Morristown Medical Center Cogeneration Plant in 2022 by the Cogen/Bette & Cring Design-Build Team, Atlantic Health approached our group to assist them in replacing an older, obsolete Trigeneration Plant in their Overlook Hospital facility.
Challenged by the constricted plant space wedged between two hospital wings and an adjacent busy thoroughfare, the team will be retrofitting existing space and expanding the plant within the small footprint. The new plant, powered by a 2.8-Megawatt gas engine generator package, will once again provide electricity, hot water, and steam on site to the Hospital while reducing their emissions significantly over traditional energy generation.
In addition to the replacement of the prime mover, our team will add a new waste heat recovery boiler, hot water heat exchangers, other ancillary CHP equipment (gas compressor, radiator, silencers, breeching, pumps, HVAC, et.). The electrical infrastructure will be replaced with new electrical switchgear, controls equipment, and transformers.
This $19 Million project, which is just beginning design and construction, will help keep Atlantic Health on track with greener energy to meet their climate goals, while reaping the economic and resiliency benefits of trigeneration.
